Teen Review: Between the Lines

Teen Book Review: Here’s a guest book review by Greenwich Library Advisory Club Co-President Eva:

Between the Lines: Stories from the Underground immaculately catalogs Uli Beutter Cohen’s ongoing social project in New York City: the Subway Book Review. Born as a blog, the Subway Book Review documents Cohen’s conversations with subway readers and creates a tangible dialogue on the massive range of these books’ subjects.

In its hardcover form, Between the Lines seamlessly transitions from one of Cohen’s casual interviews to the next, interweaving topics of social and environmental justice, nature, identity, immigration, space, time, and more. Cohen beautifully organizes these conversations so that one subject or anecdote breathes life into a grouping of interviews until it quietly transforms into another related topic. Each interview is also adorned with a picture of the reader holding their book at the subway station where they met the author. By forgoing a chapter structure, Between the Lines drips with the passion of New Yorkers and should appeal to any curious person.

While Cohen’s questions steer the book in a slightly biased direction, she helps NYC live up to its reputation as the destination for big dreamers. Between the Lines: Stories from the Underground is a must-read for anyone thinking about moving to New York City or unsure of what they want to do in life as the book places a big glowing list of goals in your face. And, if you don’t see one you like, Between the Lines will surely force you to ask the questions you need to find a unique purpose.
