The Oral History Project

Originally written by Rick Hansen.

For a glimpse into the past, keep up to date with the Oral History Project Group and their collection of interviews with Greenwich residents who helped to make or witnessed our Town’s history since 1890.

Begun in 1973 as a one-year project of the Greenwich Historical Society, the Oral History Project was invited to Greenwich Library in 1974 by then-director Nolan Lushington, who asked OHP to produce books as the library’s contribution to the town for the Bicentennial in 1976.

Since 1974, the Project has been a permanent committee of the Friends of Greenwich Library. OHP is staffed by volunteers, and new members are always welcome. The Greenwich Library Oral History Project is a member of the Oral History Association and the New England Association of Oral History.

The Greenwich Library Oral History Project collection consists of over 1,000 interviews and 142 books, which can be viewed at Greenwich Library. Some books are available for sale. The sound files are not available for distribution, but the public is invited to visit the Oral Project History office to listen to them in-house (through a pre-arranged appointment). All transcribed interviews are available to the general public on the main floor of Greenwich Library.

Plus the OHP highlights stories from throughout Greenwich’s history on their blog. Check it out!
