Kick Off the New Year with New Theater

The New York City theater scene is alive and well! Ticket sales are beginning to return to pre-pandemic levels, and now is the best time for locals to make the trek into the city. January through St. Patrick’s Day tends to see a sharp downtick in tourists visiting New York, and everything from restaurant and hotel reservations to theater tickets are more readily available (and there are frequently deals to be had). Check out our Performing Arts Librarian’s picks and tips for shows to catch in NYC this winter!

Broadway

“Days of Wine and Roses”

Performances begin January 6 @ Studio 54

The blockbuster of this winter season is “Days of Wine and Roses,” an Off-Broadway hit that’s moving uptown. Starring two of Broadway’s best, Kelli O’Hara and Brian D’Arcy James, “Days” is about a 1950s New York couple and the hazards of mixing work and love. Based on the 1962 film of the same name, this New York Times Critic Pick is not to be missed!

If you liked the show and want to revisit or haven’t yet seen the source material, check out the film from our collection:

“Appropriate”

Now playing through March 3 @ Helen Hayes Theater

Another New York Times Critic Pick taking the city by storm is the long-awaited Broadway debut of award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, “Appropriate” stars Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story) and Elle Fanning (The Great). While the premise of the story may sound cliché—a family gathering after the death of a patriarch—Jacobs-Jenkins has crafted a story that has everyone in New York talking.

After you see the show, check out the script from our play collection:

“Doubt”

Performances Begin February 2 @ American Airlines Theatre

The Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning play “Doubt” returns to Broadway for the first time in twenty years! Starring Tony winners Tyne Daly and Liev Schreiber, this modern classic tells the story of the moral decisions Sister Aloysius must face when nefarious relations are suspected between Father Flynn and a student. This play will surely be one of the highlights of New York’s winter season.

Spend some time with the script or the Oscar-winning film starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Viola Davis:

Off-Broadway

“All The Devils Are Here: How Shakespeare Invented the Villain”

Now playing @ DR2 Theatre through February 25

A New York Times Critic Pick starring Patrick Page (who you may know as Hadestown’s original Hades), this solo show, “All the Devils Are Here,” explores Shakespeare’s great villains and the invention of the villain as it pertains to modern storytelling.

“Hamlet”

Performances begin January 25 @ Greenwich House Theater

This isn’t your grandma’s Hamlet. The hilarious and iconic British comic Eddie Izzard presents a solo adaptation that is sure to be the talk of the town. This run is very limited—tickets will fly!
