Justice League Dark

In this Direct-To-DVD animated release, horrible and tragic (and violently graphic) occurrences take place in Metropolis, Gotham City, and Washington, where people are driven to kill innocent citizens whom they believe to be monsters. The Justice League thinks these strange happenings are connected to the supernatural. Batman (voiced by Jason O’Mara), despite not believing in magic or sorcery, goes out on his own to recruit people associated with the supernatural.

These recruits include sorcerors John Constantine (Matt Clark, reprising his role from the short-lived live-action 2014-15 Constantine TV series) and Zatanna (Camilla Luddington), the spirit being Deadman (Nicholas Turturro) who can inhabit any person’s body, and the mysterious Jason Blood (Ray Chase) who has a strange connection to a violent creature called Etrigan The Demon. Along the way, they’re also aided by Swamp Thing (Roger Cross) and the skimpy-dressed Black Orchid (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) as they track down the source of these awful incidents. But although the trial leads to Justice League arch-foe Felix Faust (Enrico Colantoni), things aren’t quite what they seem.

Fast-paced, yet also stressing strong characterization, Justice League Dark is a fun, exciting film that runs 71 minutes. There are some good one-liners (“I have a butler.”) and the tension-filled storyline will keep viewers in suspense wondering if our heroes will survive (some don’t).  However, the film is pretty violent and has suggestive adult content, hence its R rating. Mature audiences only.

If I have one complaint though, it’s this: Who came up with the idea of having Batman sport a chin strap? It looks just plain off!
