Doctor Strange

Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson’s 2016 film adaptation of Marvel Comics’ cult sorcerer hero Doctor Strange is an exciting, updated version of the character originally created by Steve Ditko & Stan Lee. The film offers a lot of visual eye candy that’ll dazzle even the most jaded viewer.

Brilliant but egotistical neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) survives a near-fatal car accident that otherwise damages the nerves in his hands, effectively killing his medical career. Hearing about a paraplegic who was somehow able to regain his mobility, Strange seeks the man out & is subsequently dispatched to Kamar-Taj in India.

Strange quickly becomes a student under the mysterious Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), hoping to regain the use of his hands. However, fate intervenes and Strange finds himself embroiled in the machinations of the Ancient One’s former pupil-turned-renegade sorcerer Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen), who plans to gain eternal life in exchange for turning Earth over to the Dread Dormammu, Lord of the Dark Dimension!

With a solid sense of pacing and able support from the cast (which includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Benedict Wong as “Wong”), director Derrickson keeps the audience’s interest from flagging, despite a sometimes confusing storyline. But it’s the wild depiction of various mystical worlds and dimensions (including the insane Mirror Dimension), so true to artist Ditko’s original concept, that holds the audience’s attention.
