We’re excited to welcome our next Innovator-In-Residence, Dr. Shiying Dong, to Greenwich Library in September. Many will recognize Shiying from the Innovation Experience—where she was a featured presenter—as well as from her highly attended Math Art and Innovative Crochet programs. She brings a rare combination of creativity, technical expertise, and warmth, engaging participants of all ages in math, laser cutting, crochet, and 3D printing.
Dr. Dong holds a M.A. in Math from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Illinois and is the originator of topological crochet—an art form translating advanced concepts from algebraic topology into intricate yarn sculptures. Her nationally recognized work has earned awards from the Mathematical Art Exhibition at the Joint Mathematics Meetings and the 2023 Einstein Mad Hat Award Grand Prize, with features in The New York Times. An educator and presenter at venues such as the National Museum of Mathematics, Bridges, and the Joint Mathematics Meetings, she is co-authoring a book with math artist Eve Torrence. Through yarn, paper, laser cutting, and 3D printing, she makes complex mathematical ideas accessible, revealing the beauty and playfulness of math.
