1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Families: we invite you to participate in this free program that encourages reading 1,000 books with your child before they enter kindergarten. Reading is one of the most important early literacy practices. It helps to develop children’s vocabulary, comprehension, and nurtures a love of reading. Children who start kindergarten with good pre-reading skills have an advantage: They are ready to learn to read!

How It Works

  1. Register your child on Beanstack, then visit the Children’s Desk to receive your tote bag and registration folder.
  2. Read any book to your child and start recording your books on the log.
  3. Bring back your log when you hit milestones to receive an iron-on patch for your tote bag. Milestones at 100 books, 250 books, 500 books, 750 books and 1,000 books!
  4. When they reach 1,000 books, children will receive a book to continue their reading adventures.

If you read 1 book every night that’s 365 books a year, 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in 3 years!
