Richard and Mildred Loving were an interracial couple in Virginia, trying to live a normal life in the 1950s. Interracial marriage was illegal in several southern states, and a bigoted sheriff decided to take matters into his own hands. He broke into the Loving’s home at 3 am one morning, and put the couple in jail. To avoid serving a one-year jail sentence, the couple had to agree to move out of Virginia. They couldn’t return together. Reluctantly, they moved to Washington DC, leaving their families behind.
As the social climate was beginning to change, Mildred Loving decided to contact Bobby Kennedy. Kennedy recommended that they contact the ACLU. Two ACLU lawyers agreed to take their case, and appealed it all the way to the Supreme Court.
This movie is based on a true life story. It’s filmed as a documentary, and the actors are quite believable. Great archival footage is included. I found myself rooting for the couple, and the end made me feel good.
I highly recommend The Loving Story (2016). It’s available on our Hoopla database.
