Staff Pick: ‘Enemies at the Gate’

Enemies at the Gate

“Enemies at the Gate” (2001) takes place during World War II. It’s the story of two snipers (one Russian, one German) who are stalking each other. The Russians are looking for something to boost the morale of soldiers fighting to save Stalingrad. In order to succeed, each sniper must study his target carefully to anticipate his next move. A Russian officer starts publishing daily updates on the hunt, and the story becomes a distraction for the general population, which is looking for an escape from the war.

The photography is very graphic and gripping. It really captures the horror of war. I thought the actors portrayed their characters superbly. Overall, the movie is suspenseful and riveting.
