Little Women

This is not your grandma’s Little Women! Even if you’ve never read the book by Louisa May Alcott, you have to see this film. Many versions of the March sisters’ story have graced the screen over the years but this one from director Greta Gerwig feels very current despite its 19th-century setting. This is due to several things – the structure, themes, the superb acting. Gerwig, director of Lady Bird, changes things up by telling the story in a non-linear fashion, going back and forth in time. I’ll admit, at first, it’s a bit confusing but Gerwig has faith in her audience’s intelligence to figure it out. And we do.

Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth’s interests in fashion, food, art, and their futures feel very modern, as do their passion, vibrancy, and infectious energy. And make no mistake, this is a feminist film. The theme of personal freedom, especially as it relates to women, is front and center in this Little Women. Jo wants to make her living as a writer and does not want to have to be dependent on a man. “I’m so sick of people saying that love is all a woman is fit for,” she tells her mother. “I’m so sick of it.” Meg decides to marry and start her family and defends her decision to Jo. Although her choice is different from Jo’s, it is her choice. The acting is dazzling. Saoirse Ronan is a force of nature as Jo and Florence Pugh is a strong yet sympathetic Amy. Timothee Chalamet is captivating and pitch-perfect as the sisters’ neighbor/best friend/love interest, Laurie. And Laura Dern is nothing short of stunning as Marme. Here’s the trailer!
