Greenwich Library offers a friendly and accommodating environment to all of our patrons. Among our mission goals is to provide resources and services to promote accessibility to all members of the library community. The Library offers a number of adaptive technologies, programs, and technologies including:

  • CCTV | Two closed-circuit television devices that use a camera to magnify/reduce print on books and documents that a patron needs to read. We have the DaVinci Magnifier and the Optelec ClearView+ Magnifier on the first floor.
  • JAWS | This program allows users to listen to the contents of the computer’s screen. *Temporarily Unavailable
  • SARA | This scanner enables the reading of a wide variety of printed materials. *Temporarily Unavailable
  • The Optelec Traveller | This portable electronic device can be used to magnify the print from a book or document. Available at Welcome Desk.
  • The Ruby Handheld Video Magnifier | This portable handheld video magnifier allows text on books, DVD & CD covers, and other items to be displayed on a brightly lit 4.3-inch screen, which can be magnified without any distortion or traditional magnifying glasses. Available at Welcome Desk.
  • Wheelchair | This is available for use for physically impaired patrons. Found at the Returns Desk on the first floor. Call (203) 625-6524 for reservations.
  • Pride Go Go Elite Traveller 4-Wheel Scooter | This vehicle is available for use by physically impaired patrons. Patrons can go to the Welcome Desk to request its use.

National Library for The Blind and Physically Handicapped

Through a national network of cooperating libraries, NLS administers a free library program of braille and audio materials circulated to eligible borrowers in the US by postage-free mail. Eligible borrowers can apply for exclusive use of this service in English and in Spanish. In addition, eligible individuals may access over 17,000 titles, which are available for download through NLS’s Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) site. An application for access to BARD is required and available on the NLS Bard website here.

Next Chapter Book Club

The Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) offers people with developmental disabilities (DD) to read and learn together, talk about books, and make friends in a relaxed, community setting. The club currently meets at the Community Center (http://ccigreenwich.org) on 61 E Putnam Avenue in Greenwich with occasional meetings at Greenwich Library, as well as occasional field trips. Meetings are the first Monday of the month between 7-8 pm. Contact Emorrissey@greenwichlibrary.org.

Service to the Homebound

The Greenwich Library Homebound Delivery Service is available to Greenwich residents who are physically unable to visit Greenwich Library and its branches.

Greenwich residents who wish to have their materials mailed to them at home are asked to submit a letter from a doctor, nurse, or social worker, stating that the individual is unable to visit Greenwich Library in person. The materials are sent via U.S. mail with extra mailing envelopes for returns. Postage is pre-paid by the Library. For information call (203) 625-6524.

Greenwich Library’s Book Van provides delivery and pick-up service to the following senior residences in Greenwich:

Deliveries are made every three weeks. Greenwich Library Lending Staff select and deliver a variety of materials to cardholders via the Book Van. Individuals may choose books, including the popular large print books, paperbacks, world language books, audiobooks on cassette or CD, sound recordings on CD, as well as videos or DVDs. Library for the Print Disabled

AudioBooks

AudioBooks are located on the second floor by the Fine Arts Desk. The Library carries several titles on audiocassette and compact disc in the same grouping (fiction, mystery, science fiction, and non-fiction) as Large Print Books. Call (203) 622-7930 for assistance.

 

Downloadable Library

The Downloadable Library can be accessed at the Library’s Digital Library webpage. Using your Greenwich Library card, you can download audio books, digital music, ebooks, magazines, mobile apps, and videos onto your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

 

Large Print Books

Large Print Books (hardcover and some paperback) are located by the first floor elevators next to the Periodicals entrance and the New Books section. Organized by fiction, mystery, science fiction, and non-fiction. Call (203) 622-7911 for assistance.
