It’s provided a means of transportation for settlers and naval ships. All types of agricultural and textile goods have been shipped, and fishermen have harvested fish and shellfish from its waters. Factories and mills at one time depended on tidal rivers for water power.

Even today, many people depend on the Sound for recreation and fishing.
Unfortunately, there are threats to this valuable water resource. Factories along major waterways have dumped poisons into streams and rivers which feed the sound. Fertilizer, pesticides and road salt has found its way into the water. A deadzone has been identified, and invasive species have invaded the ecosystem.

It’s hard to believe, but communities used to dump garbage and refuse into the water. After all, “out of sight, out of mind” has been the philosophy.

In an effort to educate the public and reverse the process, Jim Paul will tell us how we can protect the Long Island and global ecosystem. He’ll have live exhibits of animals native to the Sound. Patrons will be able to ask questions after the presentation.

The program is free and open to the public. Patrons of all ages are invited to participate.

http://ct.evanced.info/greenwich/lib/eventsignup.asp?ID=27096 All Ages http://ct.evanced.info/greenwich/lib/eventsignup.asp?ID=27096
