Shakespeare with Bob Smith: "Pericles"

Pericles Event Type: Adult Programs
Date: 4/16/2014
Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Time: 8:00 PM
Description:
Bob Smith returns for six consecutive Wednesdays on April 2.

Bob Smith has announced that his 20th Shakespeare play for the devoted group at the Greenwich Library will be Pericles, which he describes as ďan odd little piece that works wonderfully on stage. Itís brief and episodic - a kind of Shakespearean travelogue with a couple of fabulous brothel scenes and the best father-daughter reunion outside King Lear. In the 50 years that I've worked on these texts with groups, no play has inspired better conversations than Pericles. Director Mark Lamos at Hartford Stage presented a terrific version setting it in the cockamamie universe of the great Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte. Bowler hats floated against a cerulean blue sky. What a treat. And the critics adored it. I think the fun-loving crowd at Greenwich Library will too. I canít wait!Ē

Summary of Pericles, Prince of Tyre:
This drama is one of the great comedy plays by William Shakespeare. King Antiochus presents Pericles with a riddle as a prerequisite to winning the hand of his daughter. Pericles knows the answer to the riddle. But problem is if he fails to offer the solution, he will be put to death. But by exposing it he will reveal the King's incestuous relationship with the daughter. Pericles responds to his dilemma by playing for time and starts a journey full of normal and paranormal experiences.

On the final May 7th session, a film of Shakespeare's Pericles starring Mike Gwilym and Amanda Redman will be shown.
(Running Time 177 Minutes)

Library Journal called Bob Smith "the teacher we all should have had to introduce us to Shakespeare." The Boston Globe called him "inspired and inspiring."

The program is free and open to all. The Shakespeare series is made possible through the support of the Greenwich Library Board of Trustees and contributions by generous donors. Copies of the play will be provided.
