With humor, deft, elegant drawing and luminous color our artists in the final show of the Flinn Art Gallery's 2012 - 2013 season tell "Very Short Stories." The Gallery Committee will host an opening reception for this show on Thursday, May 9, from 6-8 pm. The exhibition will run through June 19.
The show, subtitled "Conceptual Illustration," reminds us that stories are not always words and that often words only tell part of the story. In the ageless tradition of story telling the image has long been partner to the word. To these "Very Short Stories” we bring our own perspectives, often seeing details or gaining understanding in the second or third look that we might not have noticed at first glance.
The most well-known of the artists is Roz Chast, best admired for her frequent cartoons and covers for The New Yorker. Chast, a resident of Ridgefield, where she lives with her family and several parrots, creates a world in her cartoons that speaks directly to the neuroses of our modern times with pointed wit, immediately recognizable figures and many, many words.
Since 1978 more than 1,000 of Chast's cartoons have been published in The New Yorker. In addition, she has published nine collections of her works and several original books, most recently What I Hate from A to Z. Approximately 20 original drawings will be shown, as well as a number brilliantly colored hooked rugs.
In conjunction with the exhibition in the Flinn, Roz Chast will speak as part of the Library’s AuthorsLive series in the Cole Auditorium on Monday, May 13 at 7 pm. Books will available for sale and signing through Diane’s Books.
