Born to Fly, by Michael Ferrari
It is December 7, 1941. It is the day "Bird" turns 11, and her father takes her for an airplane ride, a dream come true for Bird, who longs to be a pilot. As Bird and her family learn about the bombing of Pearl Harbor and their dad goes to fight in World War II, the war comes to their little Rhode Island town.
