Generations of Winter,
by Vassily Aksyonov
An epic novel in the style of Dr. Zhivago, Generations of
Winter follows the Gradovs, a family of Moscow intellectuals, during the
turbulent years of the early Soviet State through World War II. Historical
figures are used to further the plot, including Stalin himself. This book
vividly brings to life the paranoia and terror prevalent during the period, but
is by no means depressing. Aksyonov himself was persecuted for his
writings and emigrated to the U.S. in 1980.
