Schedule of Events for the 2013 Teen Summer Reading Program

What lies beneath the surface, a fantasy world that feels all too real or a literal look at what is under our feet? Explore the deep, dark recesses of your imagination through books, movies, art and magic beginning July 1 during Greenwich Library's Teen Summer Reading Program, Beneath the Surface.

In the Teen Summer Reading Program students entering grades 6-12 read for fun and prizes. For each 1000 pages read (up to 3000 pages), students earn a goal level prize and are entered into the grand prize drawing. Students can also earn entries if they attend our summer reading events or by submitting reviews. This year's grand prize is a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones. 

The program runs from Monday, July 1 to Saturday, August 10. Click on the link below for a full list of events.

WHAT: Teen Summer Reading Kickoff at Greenwich Library,  Information and Movie Night 
WHEN: Monday, July 1, 5-7 p.m. 
WHERE: 2nd Floor Meeting Room
DETAILS: Are you ready for summer...reading? Join us as we kick off the teen program and go Beneath the Surface. Students entering grades 6-12 are invited to come and find out how you can read for prizes and chances to win a really cool grand prize. We'll also have some pizza and watch Francis Ford Coppola's teen angst drama, The Outsiders, rated 65% on Rotten Tomatoes. WHAT: Teen Summer Reading at Greenwich Library  - Prehistoric People 
WHEN: Thursday, July 11, 3-4 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. 
WHERE: 2nd Floor Meeting Room
DETAILS: Award-winning, traveling exhibition presented by instructors from the Archaeological Associates of Greenwich (AAG) enables students to handle authentic prehistoric tools while learning about the progress of humankind from 4 million to 5,000 years ago. Images and artifacts stress ancient peoples' adaptations to their changing environment. Space is limited to 15 participants, ages 11 and up. Required online registration begins Thursday, June 27. WHAT: Teen Summer Reading at Greenwich Library - Henna Creations 
WHEN: Monday, July 15, 2-4 p.m. 
WHERE: 2nd Floor Meeting Room
DETAILS: Bring a buddy and come learn about the ancient tradition of henna from professional henna artist Jamilah. You will receive a beautiful, professionally done design from Jamilah but you can also try the practice on yourself or your friend! This program is open to students entering grades 6-12. WHAT: Teen Summer Reading at Greenwich Library - Middle School Book Club 
WHEN: Thursday, July 18, 5-6 p.m. 
WHERE: The Jewel
DETAILS: Join us for pizza and our monthly book discussion for students entering grades 6, 7 and 8. The title we will be discussing today is Michael Vey:the Prisoner of Cell 25 by Richard Paul Evans. The first book in an action-packed series from this New York Times bestselling author is about a fourteen-year old who has Tourette's syndrome and special electric powers, finds there are others like him, and must rely on his powers to save himself and the others from a diabolical group seeking to control them. WHAT: Teen Summer Reading at Greenwich Library - SummerTeen-Hot Books for Young Adults 
WHEN: Wednesday, July 24, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. 
WHERE: 2nd Floor Meeting Room
DETAILS: Here is your chance to attend a virtual conference! SummerTeen, sponsored by School Library Journal, presents popular YA authors talking about their writing experiences and current and forthcoming titles in a conversational panel format, including Q&A sessions with the audience. The online format makes it possible for us to broadcast the event giving you a front row seat to hear directly from authors you know and love. WHAT: Teen Summer Reading at Greenwich Library - Ancient Egypt 
WHEN: Wednesday, July 31, 4-5:15 p.m. 
WHERE: 2nd Floor Meeting Room
DETAILS: Archaeological Associates of Greenwich presents this fascinating overview of ancient Egypt stressing geography, the Nile's importance and the role of young people. They will talk about the Old Kingdom, the building of the Pyramids and the charming story of the boy King Pepy II; the Middle Kingdom with its "Worried Kings" and the New Kingdom with special emphasis on Queen Hatshepsut, Akhenaton and, of course, the boy King Tutankhamen and the finding of his tomb. WHAT: Teen Summer Reading at Greenwich Library - Secrets of Magic...Revealed 
WHEN: Saturday, August 3, 11 a.m. - 12 noon 
WHERE: 2nd Floor Meeting Room
DETAILS: Part magic show, part workshop The Secrets of Magic Revealed is two programs in one. The first half is a magic show complete with tricks using everyday items found around the house, school or office. After the show something incredible happens. Now the audience gets to learn how to do the magic they just witnessed. At the end of the explanation, each audience member gets to take with them a detailed instruction sheet, explaining how everything is made and done. For ages 11 and up. WHAT: Teen Summer Reading at Greenwich Library - Mortal Instruments / City of Bones Movie Party WHEN: Thursday, August 8, 6-8:30 p.m. 
WHERE: 2nd Floor Meeting Room
DETAILS: To celebrate the premiere of the City of Bones film based on Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments YA series, Greenwich Library's Student Leadership Council is throwing a movie party in the second floor Meeting Room. WHAT: Teen Summer Reading at Greenwich Library - Summer Reading Film and Finale Party 
WHEN: Thursday, August 15, 5-7 p.m. 
WHERE: 2nd Floor Meeting Room
DETAILS: Celebrate the end of summer reading at our film and finale party. Hang out with your friends, have some pizza and enjoy the movie you have selected (look for our poll over the summer).
