We're All about the Apps this summer

This summer, Greenwich Library's Technology Training Center is All About the APPs.  Each easy-to-understand session is taught by a librarian who is an expert at finding the most useful and entertaining apps available today.  All programs are free and open to the public.

"Due to the proliferation of iPads, we wanted to do a program on applications because we noticed that searching for them was difficult for any user, myself included.  We also realized that some people don't understand what apps are and how to use them.  Through this series, we hope to give our patrons some insight into the world of apps," said Training Librarian Jasmine Posey.

During the All About the Apps series, patrons will learn how to become comfortable with using applications for their iPads™, Kindle Fires™, Nook™ tablets and Android™ tablets.  Over the course of eight weeks, staff will help patrons understand what apps are and how to use them effectively in their daily lives.  The majority of the apps featured are free and topics will focus on apps for travel, social networking, lifestyle, entertainment, and eats among others.  Additionally, the Library offers several apps including BookPage, Overdrive and Mango languages, which can be found on the Downloadable Library page of the library website.

The Eats Apps program on Saturday, August 11 at 10 a.m. is definitely not something to miss.  It will feature apps for all things food related including restaurants, cooking, recipes, restaurant reservations and reviews.

Featured four times throughout the month is the Apps for Apple program.  This program will offer tips for searching the Apple App Store efficiently.  One way this will be done is with the Chomp app, which allows for cleaner and easier application searches.

Another program that cannot be missed is the Grab Bag Apps program on Tuesday, August 28 at 4 p.m.  This program will feature apps picked by the Greenwich Library staff. If any apps were missed during the 16 programs featured throughout July and August, this is where you will find them.

Finally, further your knowledge of the world of social networking by attending the Social Networking Apps program on Tuesday, July 17 at 3 p.m.  The program will feature a basic overview of apps from some of the most familiar social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.  It will also cover apps from sites you may not have heard of such as Hipstamatic, Instagram and Pinterest.  For those unfamiliar with these apps, Hipstamatic and Instagram allow the user to turn their photos into works of art and allow for creative picture sharing.  Pinterest acts as an online pin board to which the user can pin images of their likes and interests.
