Teen Band Kicking Daisies to Headline Teen Read Week

KD_PRESS-1.jpgKicking Daisies will perform in the Cole Auditorium at Greenwich Library on Saturday, October 23 at 7 p.m. as part of Teen Read Week. Teen Read Week is celebrated nationally October 17-23, with special events and programs aimed at encouraging area teens to read for the fun of it. Thousands of libraries, schools and bookstore across the country will hold similar events centered on this year's theme, Books with Beat @ your library®, which encourages teens to read a variety of materials, including poetry, audiobooks, books about music, and more.

"Teens have more activities to fill their free time than ever -- web videos, social networking sites, video games, afterschool activities, athletics --and increasingly high expectations in the classroom," said Margaret Walsh, Greenwich Library's Teen Services Librarian. "It's important that we show them that reading is something that's fun and relaxing that they can do for free. And that reading for fun can translate into better performance at school."

On Wednesday, October 20, jam with Guitar Hero World Tour at 4 p.m. in the Cole Auditorium lobby. On Thursday, October 21, teens can design their own t-shirts at 4 p.m. in the Meeting Room. Teen Read Week culminates with Kicking Daisies on Saturday, October 23 at 7 p.m. in the Cole Auditorium.

Teens are also encouraged to submit a short book review to the Teen Central Blog to be entered into a drawing to win one of three iPod Nanos. Each review gets one entry, so submit more reviews for more chances to win. Only first names will appear on the website, all other personal information will be kept confidential. Winners will be announced in December.

"Many families have learned to make do with less as a result of the economy and have flocked to the library," said Carol Mahoney, Greenwich Library Director. "Teen Read Week is a great time to make sure teens and their families know about all the free services the library can offer them and to reach out to teens who aren't regular users and encourage them to come see what they can find here. The Kicking Daisies performance will be the perfect end to Teen Read Week."

KD_PRESS-2.jpgKicking Daisies is comprised of 15-year old lead singer Duran Visek; 14-year-old guitar hero Ben Spremulli; and the rhythm section of 14-year old bassist Carly Kalafus and her big sister, 17-year-old Caitlin Kalafus. The band is currently being featured as finalists for Radio Disney's "N.B.T. (Next Big Thing)" competition, is one of the spokes-bands of hot toy property Paper Jamz, and was recently selected to be one of the key faces of Bazooka Candy Brands' music-themed Web site, BabyBottlePop.com. The video for the band's new single "Keeping Secrets" (which features Paper Jamz guitars and drums) is online now, and the song was released to on iTunes on September 28th.

Additionally, the band was covered by the local Los Angeles Fox TV station for a segment on their evening news program (here), while their nationally syndicated performance on Fox TV's Fearless Music in February (here). Kicking Daisies were the youngest band booked at The Bamboozle festival at Meadowlands Sports Complex this summer, and the group's high-profile concert appearances have also found them sharing stages with Primus, Damien Marley and rising pop star B.o.B. All Teen Read Week events are free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Margaret Walsh at 203-622-7915 or mwalsh@greenwichlibrary.org.
