"Make a Splash" and beat the heat with Cos Cob Library's Summer Reading Program.

Family Fun Afternoon keeps the summer rolling with rubber duckie races and face painting on Cos Cob Library's read beach on Saturday, July 17, at 2 p.m. Learn about Hawaiian dances and surfing through stories and songs at the Kahana Hula on Monday, July 19, at 4:30 p.m. Children entering grades 3-5 are invited to create original poems using "watery words," on Saturday, July 31, at 10 a.m.

"Make a Splash--Read!" is the theme of this year's Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading Club, for students grades K-5, is designed to encourage the joy of reading through activities, games, incentives and a summer full of special programs.

Join the Summer Reading Club throughout the summer and earn small prizes and tickets for the grand prize drawings. The program ends September 10 and prizes will be awarded at Cos Cob Library's Annual Open House on September 11. Children of all ages, including pre-schoolers, are welcome to join and enjoy the fun.

Local resident, animator and author/illustrator Jake Parker will explain how he created his graphic novel, "Missile Mouse: The Star Crusher," and brought his characters to life on Saturday, August 7, at 3 p.m. A workshop will follow where children can create their own comic strip.

The Maritime Aquarium staff will set up a supervised touch tank with live tidal-pool creatures on Wednesday, August 11, at 3:30 p.m.

Little Gym of Stamford will help encourage creative movement and imaginative play on Mondays, July 12 and August 9, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. for children ages 0-3, and 1:30 to 2 p.m. for those ages 3-6. Registration is required.

The Cos Cob Library will host Friday Flicks every Friday, July 9 to August 27, at 3:30 p.m., and Monday at the Movies, July 12 and 26 and August 16, 23 and 30 at 4 p.m. The movies will be set in and around water and relate to the "Make a Splash--Read" theme.
