The use of plastic bags takes its toll on the environment and increases our nation's dependency on foreign oil. The EPA estimates it takes a plastic bag more than 500 years to decay in a land fill, making the average person's plastic bag legacy approximately 4.175 million years. An estimated 500 billion to one trillion plastic bags are consumed world-wide each year. In the U.S. alone, an estimated 12 million barrels of oil are required to produce the 100 billion plastic bags consumed annually.
