June 2008 Archives

Harris.jpg Harris Becker, lutenist, guitarist and local resident of Cos Cob will perform at the Cos Cob Library on June 21 at 3:00 p.m. The performance will include classical works by composers Dowland, Bach, and Albeniz, among others. Harris' previous performances include Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and an appearance with the Ridgefield Symphony, though his role as a soloist, musician, educator and adjudicator has taken him all over the world. Mr. Becker is the founder and Director of the Long Island Guitar Festival, now in its 16th season. Come and hear this local gem on the first day of summer!

nancy.jpg"I have been standing on the side of life, watching it float by. I want to swim in the river. I want to feel the current." So writes Mamah Borthwick Cheney in her diary as she struggles to justify her clandestine love affair with Frank Lloyd Wright in Nancy Horan's New York Times bestselling novel LOVING FRANK (A Ballantine Books Trade Paperback; On sale: April 8, 2008).

Four years earlier, in 1903, Mamah and her husband, Edwin, had commissioned the renowned architect to design a new home for them. During the construction of the house, a powerful attraction developed between Mamah and Frank, and in time the lovers, each married with children, embarked on a course that would shock Chicago society and forever change their lives.
