May 5, Once, an Irish film about a Dublin guitarist/singer-songwriter who meets a female Czech pianist. As they get to know each other, she joins with him to put together a demo disc that will hopefully help him land a music contract. This quiet film is a gem and the central song won the Academy Award for Best Song this year. 85 minutes, rated R, in English and Czech.
May 12, Buddy, a Norwegian film from 2003. Kristoffer, a 24 year-old billboard hanger, is young and carefree. He keeps a video diary of much of his life. When some of the video diaries end up with the producer of a popular talk show, Kristoffer's life becomes a TV reality show. Kristoffer's future looks bright, but revealing your life on national television comes at a high price. As his friends start suffering, it will cost him a great deal to win them back. A coming of age story with heart. 100 minutes, adult language and themes, in Norwegian with English subtitles.
May 19, Intimate Stories, an Argentine film. Three very different people undertake journeys that change their lives. A traveling salesman seeks the perfect cream cake to win the widow of his dreams; a crochety old man hitchhikes to town in an attempt to find his forgotten lost dog; a poor young mother becomes a contestant on a TV game show in hopes of winning the grand prize. In the end, in ways they never would have anticipated, all three will find what they are searching for. In Spanish with English subtitles. 92 minutes, not rated but contains adult language and themes.
