June 2012 Archives

Amazingstoriesannual.pngThe sixth book in Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Barsoom" series, The Master Mind of Mars, was first published in 1927 in the Amazing Stories Annual (see image on left).  Recently reprinted by Disney Books in The Collected John Carter of Mars: Volume 2 (click here to reserve our copy online), Master Mind is an exciting adventure with the usual weird characters and situations, plus a bit of Burroughs' satirical commentary thrown in.

WomanInBlack.pngBoy, have I got a cool horror film for you!  The recently resurrected Hammer Film Productions released the movie adaptation of Susan Hill's novel The Woman in Black last February and it was terrific!  Now available on DVD from us (click here to reserve a copy), The Woman in Black (which did well at the box office) will hopefully find an even wider audience.

"I, The Jury" by Mickey Spillane

iTheJury.pngMy review last week (click here to read it) of Lady, Go Die!, the novel begun by the late Mickey Spillane and completed by Max Allan Collins, got a nice mention at Mr. Collins' blog (scroll down to "I love this review...", and yes, I'll be covering one of Mr. Collins' solo works in the near future). It also reminded me that the new book is a direct sequel to one of the most groundbreaking genre novels ever written:  I, The Jury.  Published in 1947, it was the first novel by Spillane after years of writing short stories for pulps and comic book scripts, and the first appearance of private eye Mike Hammer.  It also created quite a sensation at the time for it's very frank approach to sex and violence.
