Begun by the late author Damon Knight in 1965, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Inc. (SFWA) is a non-profit organization of writers who work in the various sf and fantasy genres. The SFWA helps to promote literacy, offers medical and legal expenses to members in need, and presents the annual Nebula Awards to honor the efforts of sf and fantasy writers. The SFWA also offers advice on how authors can make their first literary sale and how to be aware of scams by less-than-reputable publishers and agents. Any aspiring genre writer is encouraged to check out the SFWA site here.
